Six new cast additions have been announced this week, setting Supergirl up with a much-needed fresh start for its new Monday slot on The CW. Superman was by far the biggest casting surprise, but now there’s talks (via TV Line) of Lex Luthor’s sister Lena, veteran journalist “Snapper” Carr and proud detective Maggie Sawyer also joining the original cast for Season 2.
Lena Luthor reportedly comes to National City to escape her brother’s shadow in Metropolis. She’s “sexy, smart, and determined to get what she wants.” With rumors that Calista Flockhart isn’t too happy with Supergirl’s big move from Los Angeles to Vancouver, her character is bringing in Journalism vet Snapper Carr to “remake the news division by going old school.” In the comics, Lucas ‘Snapper’ Carr is an honorary Justice League sidekick. It wasn’t until later that he was depicted as a reporter known for covering anything and everything JLA related. Maggie (presumably Maggie Sawyer) will be National City’s newest special police officer. She’s an “out and proud detective for the newly formed Science Police, which deals specifically with metahuman and alien threats.”
There’s a lot of comic book characters who go by aliases like “The Doctor.” While we don’t have a real name to go by, the description may suggest we’ve been previously acquainted. Supergirl’s ‘Doctor’ is the “Diabolical female leader of Project Cadmus who uses her surgical skills to implant prisoners with alien technology.” This could be a play on Serling Roquette, who’s also a head of Project Cadmus known to have ties to Jimmy Olsen.
The name Nick Farrow doesn’t ring a bell in the DC Canon, but he’s got quite an interesting character description. He’ll be the second new addition to the CatCo staff. As a brash son of a famous reporter, he’s desperately trying to make a name for himself. In doing so, expect he’ll butt heads with Kara. However, he’s also questioning “whether he can leave behind his former selfish and hedonistic ways...In hanging out with Kara, the hero in Nick might finally come out.”
Last but not least, just a few days ago the CW announced Superman will star in the first two episodes of the new season. Kara kept in contact with Clark during the first season via outdated AIM-like message correspondence and Jimmy Olsen, one of Superman’s only trusted confidants. We’ve already met Kal-El as a young boy (played by Daniel DiMaggio) during Kara’s flashbacks on Krypton, but come fall we’ll officially meet the grown man behind the red cape. We may not know the actor, but one thing is for sure: Clark Kent could give Supergirl the spark it needs to win over The Flash and Arrow fans on the CW after a mediocre first season on CBS.
If Superman is a part of the highly anticipated 4-episode crossover (with The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow), that would certainly be a sight to behold. We also have yet to find out what, or who, is in that Kryptonian pod that miraculously landed in National City in the finale episode. How will Kara react when she meets her long-lost cousin? Sound off in the comments below!
