Been thinking of picking up Rage 2 for the PC? You’d better be sitting down for this then, as Bethesda has now released the minimum system requirements and the actual recommended system requirements for Rage 2.
Before we get down to the nitty-gritty and see just how taxing this game is on a modern-day PC, let me quickly get down to explaining the core differences between minimum and recommended system requirements.
- Minimum system requirements – the absolute lowest you can go in terms of specs and processing power and still be able to competently run the game. In most cases, the game will be playable, but with a few caveats: lower resolution, low textures, lower framerates, occasional stuttering and much more.
- Recommended system requirements – in most cases this pertains to what you need to have in order to run it on PC and still get the optimal benchmark. Most of the time, the optimal resolution and framerate to hit is 1080p and 60 frames per second, and having the recommended specs basically ensure that you can hit those numbers. Sure, you may have to tinker around in the advanced graphics settings to see if you can push those numbers further, but for the most part you’ll be able to play the game at a buttery smooth pace. Sometimes games will come with recommended specs for different gaming resolutions, such as 1440p or 4K, but usually it tries to just hit 1080p.
Now that you have a basic understanding of how system requirements work, it’s time to see how Rage 2 will test your rig. Here are the minimum and recommended system requirements for the game:
Minimum System Requirements:
A 64-bit processor and operating system is required
OS: Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 (64-Bit versions)
Processor: Intel Core i5-3570 or AMD Ryzen 3 1300X
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 780 3GB or AMD R9 280 3GB
Storage: 50 GB available space
Recommended System Requirements:
A 64-bit processor and operating system is required
OS: Windows 7, 8.1, or 10 (64-Bit versions)
Processor: Intel Core i7-4770 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
Memory: 8GB RAM
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB or AMD Vega 56 8GB
Storage: 50 GB available space
It’s nice to see the third-generation Intel i5 can still pull some serious weight, and I fully expected an AMD R9 280 to still be playable in today’s market, considering how amazing that card was. However, expect to see this game run at what I’m assuming to be just 30 frames per second and on the lowest possible settings.
The recommended requirements are where you’re going to want to look, though. It is great that you can use a mid-range CPU in the form of the Ryzen 5 1600X, but the GPU is a bit different. It’s asking for a GTX 1070, or a Vega 56. This is probably one of the highest GPU requirements I’ve seen for a game, and that should be telling of just how many bells and whistles Bethesda has for Rage 2. Only time will tell if we’ll see it translate into something wondrous, though.
As for RAM, everyone is expected to have 8GB by now as the absolute bare minimum, dual channel preferably. Also reserve 50GB of hard drive space for the game once it releases this May 14, if you’re planning on getting it.
Rage 2 is set to be released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this May 14. Pre-orders are now available, with bonuses if you really want them.
