Arcade and city builders are among some of the most popular and prolific games found on mobile devices, but rarely do you see the two genres coming together. While arcade games tend to have the goal of breaking previous high scores, city builders rely on patiently saving up resources and purchasing more upgrades to expand and build upon your empire. Mobile game developer’s Neon Play, however, have set out to combine the two genres into a game they hope will provide a challenge while allowing players to see the fruits of their labors pay off as they build a larger and more flourishing city.
Traffic Panic Boom Town roots itself firmly in the Arcade game genre as one of the main activities you do in the game involves a kind of Crossy Road type gameplay. Players are tasked with running a stoplight at a busy intersection. By tapping the screen, players change a stop light to red or green, allowing traffic to pass. Players must exercise good judgement though, because cars in the intersecting lane never actually stop. This requires planning carefully when to allow cars to go and when to stop them in order to avoid an accident. But don’t wait around too long. If too many cars are waiting in for the light to change, it causes a traffic jam and the session comes to an end.
For every car that does manage to make it through the intersection without an accident, players earn gold coins they can use for purchasing new buildings and upgrading them. Players can win other awards too when they have a good intersection run. After the round ends they will earn a bronze, silver or gold chest full of goodies depending on how many cars made it through successfully.
Chests require time or gems to unlock, but once opened they include important resources like new bulding cards, gems and coins. As they acquire more and more resources, players can use these to build more attractions that earn more money in the intersection piggy banks. This allows players to play intersections more often in order to earn coins. As the town grows, more intersections appear as well, that each have their own piggy banks that fill depending on how built up the area is. The game has just launches on the app store so some features may not be fully available yet, but it appears some events are on the horizon for the game as well.
