The Walking Dead comics issue #156 just killed a major character in an interesting turn of events. For those of you who aren’t caught up with the graphic novels, Rick Grimes and his community are at war with the Whisperers, a group of people who wear the skins of the dead to live amongst them.
Alpha, the leader of the Whispers, is the mother of Carl Grimes’ girlfriend, Lydia. Alpha has a very strict way of viewing the world and imposes rules she believes helps her group survive. For example, Alpha allowed the men in her group to repeatedly rape Lydia because she believed men could not control their sexual desires.
We won’t give away too much here, but Negan eventually encounters the Whisperers and meets Alpha. Negan has his own code of ethics and sense of morality, even if it’s a bit twisted at times. Something Negan never permitted while leading the Saviors was rape. Negan repeatedly told his followers rape (or any form of sexual assault) will not be tolerated. He killed one of his followers who tried to rape a prisoner of Alexandria.
Needless to say, Negan doesn’t like the way Alpha sees the world. Negan takes advantage of Alpha during a moment of weakness to slice her throat. Negan cuts off Alpha’s head, pleased at himself and believing Rick will enjoy the sight of Alpha’s head. Rick and Negan have a strange relationship at this point, so how he’d react to seeing Alpha dead is unknown. Who knows how Alpha’s death will affect Lydia, but she’s already pretty messed up.
