There’s a reason why Negan loves his baseball bat so much. The Walking Dead comics recently revealed in Negan’s standalone backstory comics’ fourth issue why the infamous villain named his weapon of choice Lucille, and it’s a sad story.

Before the zombie apocalypse, Negan was married working as a gym teacher and car salesman. He was always a hardass and charismatic, but his life changed forever when he found out his wife was diagnosed with cancer. He couldn’t handle the thought of losing her, so Negan looked elsewhere for female affection. That’s right, Negan had an affair.

The worst part of the affair was his dying wife knew about the infidelity. When it hit Negan his wife’s health was quickly deteriorated, he ended his affair and stayed by his wife’s side.

What was his wife’s name? Lucille. To make matters worse, Negan was at the hospital with his wife when the zombie virus outbreak took over. Lucille died in the hospital and reanimated in front of Negan. He doesn’t realize what’s wrong with his wife when the issues ends. It’s possible Negan may have killed his zombified wife.

As twisted as it sounds, Negan keep’s his wife’s memory alive through the barbed-wire baseball bat. If Negan has any sense of morality left, it probably has to do with his wife. What do you think about Negan naming his baseball bat after his wife? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
