There will be more death to come in The Walking Dead season 6. Carol isn’t safe. Daryl isn’t safe. Glenn isn’t safe. Maggie isn’t safe.
The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman recently discussed during his appearance on Inside the Actors Studio why deaths were a necessary part of the show’s plot. Kirkman created a world where the people are constantly reminded they can become a walking corpse at any moment. Kirkman doesn’t want anyone to feel their favorite character is “safe” because it means the show has lost its essence.
"If you go too long a period with characters surviving and being safe you lose that element of 'Oh my god, these characters could go at any moment,'" Kirkman told Inside the Actors Studio. "That's a tremendously powerful engine that drives this thing and it's very emotional but in comics it's me and the artist going, 'I guess those lines in the paper don't exist anymore. Oh, well.' It's very emotional for us because we do love these characters but it doesn't have that added element that the TV show has where these are our friends that we see everyday but it doesn't stop us. We don't care."
Daryl is an example of a character that has become untouchable. It seems he always finds a way out of danger no matter what’s thrown his way. However, The Walking Dead villain Negan’s appearance in the series is a great way for the show creators to shake things up in the series. Negan is unpredictable and a threat to anyone; even the members of his crew The Saviors don’t trust him.
The Walking Dead season 6 returns to AMC on Feb. 14 at 9 p.m.
