The Walking Dead ’s writers took their time deciding who Negan would kill in the Season 7 premiere, according to Director Greg Nicotero.

ComicBook.com reports Nictotero attended a press conference at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 where he discussed The Walking Dead ’s big return this fall. Nicotero explained the death of the character “changes the direction of the survivors forever,” which made the decision even more emotional than expected.

“When we shot the episode, that to me was as critical as the actual moment which is the five minutes after, the ten minutes after, the twenty minutes after, when the smoke clears in the battlefield sort of scenario,” Nicotero said at the press conference. “It's a fascinating exercise in emotion because shock and denial and all these things play into it. It was a master class in acting from these people right here to watch on a daily basis. Every time you get the outlines or the scripts or Scott and the writers pitch, you never want to hear that it's coming. I think with the this particular episode, everybody knows it's coming so it's agonizing to think about the fact that we're changing the landscape of our characters."

There are rumors circulating the show will kill off not one, but two major characters in The Walking Dead Season 7 premiere. The deaths will be brutal, no matter which character meets Lucille. In The Walking Dead comics, it’s Glenn who dies during the group’s first Negan encounter. However, the show has switched up comic book character deaths in the past. For example, it was Abraham who was shot in head by an arrow in the comics, but on the show Dr. Denise suffered his fate.
