The Kingdom might offer a new beginning for Morgan and Carol in The Walking Dead Season 7. Cast members Lennie James and Melissa McBride recently stopped by The Walking Dead Season 7 Preview Special hosted by The Talking Dead to discuss what’s next for their characters.

The Walking Dead Season 6 finale left Carol desperate to die and Morgan unwilling to let her go. The characters eventually run into members of The Kingdom, run by a good man named Ezekiel . The strangers take Morgan and Carol back to The Kingdom to help care for them. Carol was shot in the leg after a Savior she attacked came back for revenge. Meanwhile, Morgan felt defeated over Rick’s unwillingness to find another way to deal with threats, besides killing them in their sleep.

"Morgan ends up on the road to the Kingdom," James said during The Walking Dead special . "It will be interesting and one of the things that excited me about the episodes coming up is how Morgan survives in this particular group without Rick as an anchor and without Rick over his shoulder saying, 'I'm gonna put you in this cell.' This is Morgan meeting people as Morgan, who have no knowledge of him and have no knowledge of his history. One of the things that's most interesting to me about Morgan is he smiles in the Kingdom. It will be interesting to find out why that happens."

Carol left Alexandria because she couldn’t handle the pressure to protect the community. She kept a log of all the people she’s had to kill to protect her group and it got to her. She knew if she stayed in Alexandria she’d lose her humanity, and become the kind of person she never wanted to be. Morgan joining Alexandria served as a reminder to Carol that the way she was living wasn’t right, even if Rick and the rest of the group believed it was. Carol was ready to be out on her own until her time to die came up.

Morgan saw himself in Carol, which is why he knew he had to save her. After Morgan’s son died, he became angry and felt the need to clear areas filled with walkers. He’s been as desperate as Carol was to die. It wasn’t until someone showed him there’s still good in life, despite the walkers roaming around. Morgan will try to remind Carol life is precious, but it doesn't mean they’ll leave The Kingdom.
