The launch trailer for the first This War Of Mine expansion, The Little Ones , has been released by developer 11 bit studios. Unfortunately, the gameplay footage in the 90-second trailer is every bit as depressing as you’d expect from an expansion spotlighting the many children orphaned by war.

If you aren’t familiar, This War Of Mine is a survival game set during a war in the fictitious country of Graznavia. Players control a handful of the surviving residents of the town of Pogoren, which seems to be near the frontline, and it’s your job to locate supplies, fortify the bombed out building they call home and try to survive the war. Players assign tasks to each member of the group, based on skill, current health and other factors, and hope for the best. But there are no shortage of hard decisions to make along the way.

Now, 11 bit studios is taking its exploration of civilian life under siege one step further. With The Little Ones , the studio adds young children to the game, introducing a variety of new scenarios and moral dilemmas to a project that already challenged players to think about more than tanks and explosions when playing a war game. In some cases, you’ll be able to provide shelter and protection to those in need. But not all of your decisions will have the same positive outcome.

In addition to tackling tough subject matter, and shedding some light on an oft-skipped subject, 11 bit studios is clearly hoping to do some good with the first This War Of Mine expansion. The studio has announced plans to donate $1 from each The Little Ones purchase to War Child, a charity operating out of Canada, Holland and the UK dedicated to “ supporting children and young people affected by war. ” It’s not the first time the two organizations have worked together , with 11 bit studios and the This War Of Mine community raising more than $137,000 for War Child to date.
