UPDATE: We've heard back from Ubisoft but it's pretty much what you'd expect. Here's the full statement:

"We can’t comment on rumor or speculation. We’re always happy when players are excited about our games, past, present and future."

Original Story: We’re not sure how many people were actually asking for a Watch Dogs sequel, given the relatively modest review scores earned by the first game, but a new update from a trusted news outlet suggests Watch Dogs 2 could hit consoles (and/or PC) before the end of 2016.

It’s been an interesting week for Ubisoft. On Monday, rumors of an off-year for the Assassin’s Creed franchise began to circulate online. While there’d been no official word from Ubisoft on the matter, the prevailing theory is that the next major Assassin’s Creed release won’t emerge until 2017. It’s also believed the next entry in the AC franchise will be set in ancient Egypt; a significant departure from the European and Colonial American settings we’ve seen thus far. But that doesn’t mean the publisher doesn’t have something else big planned for 2016. After all, there are investors to please.

According to Kotaku, part of the reason Ubisoft feels comfortable skipping out on this year’s Assassin’s Creed release is because the publisher is preparing for the debut of a yet-to-be-announced Watch Dogs sequel. The site claims Watch Dogs 2 will be set in San Francisco, per unidentified sources, and Kotaku believes Watch Dogs 2 (unofficial title) will debut before the end of 2016. There’s not much else in the way of hard information and no telling whether or not we can expect the return of the gaming industry’s most insufferable protagonist, Aiden Pearce.

We’ve reached out to Ubisoft, hoping to get official confirmation that Watch Dogs 2 is currently in development, and will update this post if/when we hear anything back from the publisher.
