In a new trailer, Adult Swim Games has announced the release date for upcoming post-apocalyptic platformer Rain World, starring the cute-creepy Slugcat: half-slug, half-cat. Check out the trailer below:
The trailer asks: “What fate a Slugcat? Prey? Und predator? As the old world dies, a new ecosystem evolves in a land where even rain can kill. Each creature struggles for its own survival. Each beast has a place on the food chain, which it seeks to deny, and through this ruined landscape - strange monstrosities and ancient mysteries - Slugcat journeys alone. It is a search for shelter, a search for answers, a search for home. What fate a Slugcat?”
Indeed. I have to confess some level of platformer weariness (I’m guessing 99.9% of indies are platformers at this point), but even my jaded gaming journalist brain is piqued by the intriguing world, adorable Slugcat design and cool rain mechanic.
On Rain World ’s Steam page, Slugcat’s tragic backstory is explained. Separated from their family in a terrible flood, Slugcat must maneuver a desperate, dangerous world full of ruin and mystery to find their family again. There is always the threat of another terrifying downpour or another hungry beastie to keep Slugcat on their toes.
Rain World is “inspired by the simplicity and aesthetics of 16-bit classics” and requires “fast-paced sneaking, both upon your own prey and past the jaws of hungry predators.” Slugcat cannot brute-force its small, soft body through the treacherous, rainy world. Instead Slugcat must rely on wit, cunning and stealth to make their way through Rain World.
Rain World features the following:
Sneak, climb, and pounce your way through a dynamic, ever-changing ecosystem of predators and prey
Explore a vast world of over 1600 rooms, spanning 12 diverse regions filled with ancient secrets and undiscovered dangers
Nimble movements and procedurally generated animation gives slugcat a natural fluidity of movement and unique sense of weight
Intense, primal predator encounters will challenge your reflexes
Limited resources and the constant, impending threat of rain will test your nerve
Rain World hits PC and PS4 on Mar. 28. Will you be playing? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
