Frozen is coming to Broadway , but “ Let It Go ” and that one song about how Kristoff is way too intimate with trolls doesn’t exactly make for a smash musical. So will the Broadway adaptation of Frozen include new songs and maybe snatch a few moments from the upcoming sequel, Frozen 2 ? Let’s look at the evidence.
New songs are a definite go. By my count the Broadway hit Hamilton has 46 assorted songs, reprises, and minor numbers. Book of Mormon has 22. Frozen , by contrast, has nine songs.
Quick sing-along break:
Frozen - “Let It Go”
Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who wrote the music for Frozen , will compose the score for Frozen on Broadway. “Let It Go” and “In Summer” will soon have company.
But the Lopez’s aren’t the only Frozen talent returning for the Broadway musical. The Frozen Broadway show will be written by Jennifer Lee, who wrote and co-directed the Frozen movie.
Simultaneous with the development of the Frozen Broadway show, Lee is also busy writing Frozen 2 . Both are expected to premiere in 2018 (though the Frozen Broadway show will have a test run in 2017 in an unnamed city).
Though it seems unlikely that the Broadway Frozen will spoil the movie sequel, the potentially long engagement time for Broadway shows would suggest that Frozen will incorporate a handful of elements from Frozen 2 , so as not to be outdated once the sequel has arrived in theaters.
Frozen on Broadway will be directed by Alex Timbers, director of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson , choreographed by Peter Darling ( Billy Elliot ), and with production design by Bob Crowley of Disney’s Broadway adaptation of Mary Poppins .
