France-based consumer electronics company Withings showcased a new thermometer, called the Withings Thermo, which works without having to enter the body. The gadget non-invasively takes the user’s body temperature using 16 infrared sensors and then collects data on the accompanying smartphone app.
“With one touch of the button, it takes your temperature within two seconds using HotSpotSensor™ technology,” said Arielle Carpenter, Senior Marketing Manager at Withings, to iDigitalTimes. “This uses an array of 16 sensors that takes 4,000 measures in 16 seconds.”
The product, which has won two CES 2016 awards, takes a measurement from the temporal artery, which is the most accurate part of the body to assess temperature. The user simply places the thermometer against their temperature for a reading in seconds that will be displayed on the LED display.
The display has a color system: green font means normal heat levels, orange is moderate, and red is high. It also displays the name of the user — each gadget can record and store data for up to eight users — when connected to Wi-Fi, it can send and receive information to share with a health professional. The smartphone application stores the data for all the users and it also offers feedback on heating a room or house.
"We invented the first Wi-Fi connected health device, Withings' smart scale, to enable users seamless access to their data to take control of their weight,” said Cédric Hutchings, CEO of Withings. “Withings Thermo was designed to have a similar impact on the family's health routine."
