You don’t know happiness until you’ve heard a Cactuar speak for the first time. World of Final Fantasy brings to life some of your favorite characters from the Final Fantasy franchise once again in their latest PlayStation 4 and PS Vita title.
iDigitalTimes recently played World of Final Fantasy during a Square Enix press event for New York Comic Con 2016. World of Final Fantasy follows the story of twins Reynn and Lann as they try to recover memories of their past. The two travel between worlds collecting Mirages as they piece together clues about their lives. Even though the game is meant to introduce a younger generation to the franchise, longtime Final Fantasy players can appreciate the nostalgia as well. You’ll see your worlds based on FFVII and FFX , as well as familiar faces like Cloud, Lightning and Tidus. Some of the original voice actors have even reprised their roles for the game.
But the best part is hearing previously unvoiced characters speak for the first time. We won’t give too much away, but there’s an encounter with Aeons that will give Final Fantasy lovers life! When you hear these characters’ voices, your first thought will be, “Yeah, that’s what they would sound like, even though I kind of hate that they sound like that.”
World of Final Fantasy also definitely takes a page out of the Pokémon playbook. Mirages are basically beings you “imprison” to fight alongside you in battles. Each Mirage comes with different stats and abilities, but must be weakened before you can catch it. The Mirages level up the more you fight.
The twins are allowed to stack two mirages on their heads during battle, one small and one medium. You toggle between the small and big versions of Reynn and Lann, giving you different stacking options. It sounds a bit confusing out of context, but World of Final Fantasy’s battle system is simple.
Reynn and Lann might be twins, but they couldn’t be more different. Reynn is the studious, serious one always lecturing Lann. Meanwhile Lann is goofy and fun, but ready to protect his sister at all costs. However, it is annoying Reynn (the girl) is drastically weaker than Lann (the boy). She died pretty easily during the boss battle in the demo, though we beat our chosen Aeon in what must’ve been the luckiest playthrough ever.
And of course, World of Final Fantasy is an open-world game. The main story will take about 40 hours to complete, but Square Enix confirmed to iDigitalTimes there will be about 100+ hours total of quests and mirage-collecting for players as well as crossplay between the console and PS Vita.
Overall, we’re impressed with World of Final Fantasy. It’s definitely something diehard Final Fantasy fans will appreciate, but simple enough for newcomers of the franchise to also enjoy.
