‘WWE 2K17’ Gameplay Trailer Might Be Least Useful Preview Footage In Years

The first official gameplay trailer for WWE 2K17 is out this week, in a heavily watermarked state, featuring in-ring and entrance shots of dozens of performers from the WWE 2K17 roster. But it’s the latest in a long line of WWE 2K previews that stops short of actually giving us some idea of what the in-ring action will look like when the franchise returns to stores this holiday season.

Generally, when a publisher releases a new gameplay trailer, the released footage gives us some idea of what to expect from the game in question. It might not offer a complete picture, instead focusing on particular mechanic or skill, but fans generally come away from the viewing feeling like they have a better understanding of what it might be like to play a particular game. But it seems like the folks at 2K and Yuke’s didn’t get the memo, based on the relatively lack of information to be gleaned from the first official WWE 2K17 gameplay trailer.

This week’s preview video isn’t much more than a series of quick cuts, featuring one and two-second clips of WWE Superstars headed to the ring, performing their most famous moves and taunting the crowd. There are no extended clips from any one interaction, except for a bit of backstage brawling between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar near the end of the trailer. But the new trailer fails to communicate the major gameplay changes 2K has already promised, despite including a bit of footage from the revamped ladder matches we’ll see in WWE 2K17. It seems like we’ll have to wait for the usual full match videos to get a better idea of how the moment to moment action has changed in WWE 2K17. The biggest revelations in this week's videos were some new OMG! moves, including Shane McMahon jumping off the Hell in a Cell cage and Lesnar being speared into a fuse box.
