En Sabah Nur stands out amongst the X-Men villains, according to X-Men: Apocalypse writer Simon Kinberg.
The writer recently explained to Empire why En Sabah Nur or “Apocalypse” sets a different tone for the upcoming X-Men film. Apocalypse, played by Star Wars actor Oscar Isaac, is someone even Magneto wouldn’t want to mess with.
“This one does some things that the franchise hasn’t really done on film,” Kinberg told Empire. “You have a character called Apocalypse, who wants to do a different kind of damage than X-Men movie ever has. It’s the first time we’ve had a villain in an X-Men movie who could compete in terms of physical power and presence with Magneto. It’s an interesting dynamic to create.”
Kinberg’s comments to Empire are similar to what he told MTV back in September regarding his vision for the film. Kinberg said the scale of X-Men: Apocalypse will be much bigger than X-Men: Days of Future Past.
“I feel like we have been, the ’X-Men’ franchise, has been growing a little bit more into science fiction,” Kinberg told MTV. “I think ’Days of Future Past’ with time travel and the Sentinels took us into a slightly broader, more science fiction world than the films had occupied in the past. We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let’s say, cosmic. Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it’s not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic.”
X-Men: Apocalypse, starring Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto, hits theaters May 27.
