Floatopia, from the makers of Marvel Rivals, NetEase Games, is an Animal Crossing-inspired life simulation game coming to PlayStation 5 in 2025.
The announcement was made by lead game designer Zane, who also said that Floatopia will have players traveling in a superpowered world to meet new friends.
The story of the game is set in a fantastical world that is filled with superpowers that can be acquired through just a phone call.
Floatopia is Coming in 2025
Unfortunately, the game's protagonist is out of luck as the best superpowers in the world have already been taken by other people. This has left you with less than-impressive ones to choose from.
This particularly dire situation has forced you into a dead-end job where you feel marginalized and underappreciated.
Fortunately for you, your character stumbles upon a floating island where you join others who have similarly "useless" superpowers, according to the PlayStation Blog.
The world of Floatopia is made up of unique miniature toys that are made with an art style that is bright, fresh, and full of fantasy. The visuals make you feel like they were handcrafted by the artists piece by piece.
Floatopia features residents who look like figurines, houses that are made from milk cartons, and stations that were seemingly crafted from clouds. The developers said they put a great deal of effort into the details of the game's magical world.
Despite the hype of the announcement, many fans are not happy with Floatopia as it is looking to be a free-to-play game but with gacha. This comes as there have been many gacha games in recent years that feature amazing visuals, said GamesRadar.
A Potential Gacha System
Some players have already seen Floatopia's website which features a currency known as "Gacha Tickets" that are seemingly used for "standard and pick-up gacha." One user on Reddit even commented, saying, "This is super cute! But I wish it wasn't a gacha."
Another user wrote that they hated the gacha system and compared it to gambling, noting that it has no place in the cozy gaming scene. The user called it really "slimy behavior" and "incredibly concerning."
But for now, only time will tell just how deep the gacha system is in Floatopia and players will have to wait until the game launches to try it out.
Another feature that is seen in the game is being able to decorate your island as well as yourself, which is highly reminiscent of Animal Crossing, according to NintendoEverything.
