On Tuesday, the official BBC YouTube channel, Doctor Who: The Fan Show, revealed new details about the upcoming Christmas Special from a table read with Peter Capaldi, Steven Moffat and other writers and actors from Doctor Who.
It’s been confirmed comedian Matt Lucas will return to his role as Nardole, first introduced in last year’s Christmas Special, ‘The Husbands of River Song.’ Nardole will appear in the 2016 Christmas Special, in addition to playing “sizeable role” in the show’s upcoming tenth season, according to Den of Geek UK.
Christel Dee, the host of The Fan Show, didn’t reveal any major plot spoilers about the upcoming Christmas Special, though she did seem quite impressed with Lucas’s character. “Nardole is quite different from your normal companion, because most companions are, like, impressed by everything -- and it’s not that Nardole’s not impressed -- but what I like about him is he’s almost like an anti-companion. He’s kind of like, ‘Can we not? No, Doctor, don’t do that.’ But not in a horrible way, in a really funny way, and they make such a great double act,” Dee said.

It’s not clear if the Doctor’s new companion, Bill (Pearl Mackie), will have a role in the 2016 Christmas Special. She didn’t seem to be among the people at the table reading, briefly seen in the opening moments of the video. It’s possible the show will give her a more lengthy introduction in the early episodes of Season 10 instead.
The cast and crew of Doctor Who were spotted filming at a country house in Bristol back in August, either for early episodes of Season 10 or (perhaps more likely given the fake snow spotted around the set) the 2016 Christmas Special.
Doctor Who Season 10 will premiere on the BBC in spring 2017 (there is not yet a firm release date), with episodes available stateside via BBC America and Amazon shortly thereafter. The 2016 Christmas Special will air on the BBC Dec. 25, 2016. Be sure to stay tuned to iDigitalTimes for more Doctor Who news from New York Comic Con 2016, running from Oct. 6-9.
