HTC may release a smartwatch on June 6, according to tech informant Evleaks. This report follows news of a prospective late-April launch for an HTC smartwatch, which has since come and gone.
While few details are known about the rumored smartwatch by HTC, the manufacturer has long stated it wouldn’t release a wearable until it could bring something to market that hadn’t already been done. The manufacturer did release a fitness tracker as part of its HealthBox collaboration with Under Armor last year. HealthBox includes a fitness tracker, heart rate chest strap, and a smart scale to allow users to record and access exercise information from the devices to their smartphone. However, HTC has yet to release a standalone smartwatch.
Instead, HTC has taken an interest in virtual reality with its HTC Vive VR headset. It has also worked to improve its standing in the smartphone market. The recently launched HTC 10 will soon hit stores and has received positive reviews from tech pundits.
September 2015 rumors suggested that HTC would release an Android Wear smartwatch with a round display and a 360 x 360 resolution, but there hasn’t been much follow up on such reports. Android Authority suggests a formal announcement for an HTC smartwatch could coincide with Google’s I/O conference, which takes place May 18-20.
