The New York Times released its (mostly positive) review of the iPhone 7 on Tuesday, in which it claimed Apple’s 2017 iPhone would include a full-screen face with a virtual home button integrated into the display. So long, black bezel.
According to the NYT, word of the forthcoming edge-to-edge displays came from two Apple employees, who “spoke on condition of anonymity because the product details are private.” Apple declined to make an official comment on the next iteration of the iPhone. And yep, it’s likely the 10th Anniversary iPhone also won’t have a headphone jack. It seems odd Apple employees would let this information slip so early on, and that it was tather subtly slid into a later paragraph in the iPhone 7 review.
Word of the revamped iPhone display corroborates reports from August, claiming Foxconn is developing an all-glass case and OLED screens for a future incarnation of the Apple smartphone.
MacRumors points out that “with an all-glass, edge-to-edge display, Apple design chief Jony Ive's vision of an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass could finally come true in 2017.” The blog also posits that the rumored OLED screen will allow apple to make a thinner, more efficient iPhone with a more vivid, true-to-life display. The 10th Anniversary (possibly called the iPhone 8) model could also feature curved edges, similar to the trouble-plagued Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
In the meantime, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus begin shipping Friday, Sept. 16, to the first round of pre-order customers. While not the dramatic change expected for the 2017 iPhone, the iPhone 7 brings several notable changes to the line, including enhanced processing power, improved cameras and water resistance, as well as increased battery life.
