One of the most common complaints in reviews for The Last Guardian is that Trico doesn’t always follow your commands. In fact, more often than not, it seems the big beast would rather ignore you or do the opposite. It is frustrating, but don’t worry.
It is possible to strengthen your relationship with Trico by being nice. A Facebook Messenger interactive experience has been set up for you to see how to train Trico, or you can just follow the tips below.
Trico Training Guide
Many of the tips given in the Messenger experience are pretty obvious. You’ll earn the trust of Trico faster by petting it, pulling out any spears or arrows and feeding it barrels.
To pull out a spear or arrow, jump onto Trico and move over to the foreign object. Once nearby, you’ll be prompted to press Circle. Do so, and you’ll grab onto the object. Move around the left stick to pull it out.
Petting Trico is even easier. Any time you are holding onto the creature, simply hold Circle and you’ll start petting Trico. Try petting in different areas for different results, the best seem to be up by the head.
Feeding Trico is also very important. Trico only seems to eat glowing barrels, so make sure you give it any barrels you can find. Sometimes, barrels can be partially buried, so if you find one of these, grab it with Circle and move around the left stick to yank it out. Make sure Trico eats the barrels as well, because sometimes you’ll throw one its direction and it will refuse to eat.
Combat Guide
If Trico isn’t responding to you, there could also be a few obstacles distracting it. If you see something that looks like a stained glass eye, you’ll need to destroy or hide it somehow. Oftentimes, those creepy suits of armor that come to life hold shields with the eye on it. If this happens, you’ll want to dash into the suit of armor with the Square button to force it to drop the eye.
Once all eyes are removed or hidden, Trico will function normally again. If suits of armor are around, it’s safest to just climb up on Trico and let the beast do all the killing. Once all guards are taken out, you’ll need to pet Trico a few times to calm it back down.
If you see green smoke at all, you’ll need to find out where it is coming from and stop it. Green smoke will distract Trico. Often, the smoke is coming from a cauldron that you can close. Follow the smoke to the source, and you should be able to figure it out.
At times, you’ll have a mirror to use. To pull out the mirror, use the left and right arrow keys on the D-pad. Once out, use the mirror by holding down Circle. Trico will shoot lightning at whatever you illuminate with the mirror.
If you follow these tips, Trico should be more responsive when you give commands. That being said, don’t expect Trico to ever listen to you all the time; it is a wild animal after all.
