In the latest video from The Last Guardian, Japanese teaser trailer footage reveals how the player makes besties with Trico, the fantastic beast who is your companion throughout the game. Check out the new The Last Guardian footage below:
My favorite part of the footage is probably the player character’s insistence, coaxing and wheedling Trico all the way along. It really does feel like interacting with a beloved pet and trying to get them to understand what you want them to do. Sure, Trico may be a gigantic griffon-esque and vaguely canine fantasy creature, but his independent mind is his own and getting him to help you is as much a puzzle as any other gameplay challenge.
You also see great shots of the castle where your player character is being held, as well as his efforts to fight off some bogeys who attempt to detain him, hinting at gameplay beyond puzzles and wheedling.
Hopefully, The Last Guardian’s lengthy development cycle will include correcting what some preview players felt were camera problems, platforming issues and borked puzzle logic. After all, games do not ride on nostalgia and atmosphere alone. In our preview of the press demo, we praised the game’s feel while noting that animation, textures and the camera were not quite up to par.
The Last Guardian has a Dec. 6 release date, with reviews arriving a day before release. Will you be playing? Feel free to let us know in the comments section below.
