New seasons of Luke Cage, Daredevil , and Jessica Jones won’t release for at least another year, but Marvel-Netflix has something planned to persuade fans to re-watch all the previous seasons. Partnering with a post-production company called Deluxe, Netflix will re-release each series in HDR format.
Daredevi l will be the first to get the upgrade, followed by Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Marvel-Netflix has not confirmed the exact re-release schedule, so it’s unclear if Iron Fist will release in HDR or if Marvel plans to hold off for now.
“It opens up visually a new world,” said Domenic Rom, president of Deluxe TV Post. High Dynamic Range (HDR) allows much brighter images with a much wider range of colors. The lightest pixels can go up to 40x brighter than standard displays. Unlike Ultra HD which focuses on more pixels, HDR is about pixel accuracy in luminosity, contrast, and color variety.
For example, catching the details in the dark, hallway fight scenes in Daredevil would have been easier with higher contrast. HDR can maintain that same dark tone while simultaneously allowing brighter colors, making the images pop out instead of blend into the background.
HDR and 4K are often considered the future of streaming, however the tech is still far off for the average viewer. HDR requires a TV with higher processing capabilities, which costs a lot more than the average HDTV screen. However, with prices for UHD and 4K TVs dropping every year, and more and more content being released in higher quality, the market is slowly but surely making the shift.
