Minecraft Realms looked like it was going to be the first game playable across the PS4 and Xbox One. A tweet basically confirmed the paid hosting service would be available on “competing devices.” Before you get too excited, the tweet has already been deleted and replaced with something else.
While the original tweet from the Minecraft Twitter account is gone, user @bennywatts2003 managed to snag a screenshot of the message. In the picture, we can clearly see an Xbox One controller, a PS4 controller, a phone and a tablet/PC. The text reads “Minecraft brings everybody together, including competing devices! Realms supports cross-platform play, & there’s a free trial!”
That tweet has since been deleted, getting replaced by a new one. This new message reads the same, but a different picture only shows players on tablets.
So what does Mojang actually mean with all these tweets? It seems that Minecraft Realms will be getting some sort of cross-platform play, but not across PS4 and Xbox One. It’s probable we’ll be seeing iOS and Android players teaming up in the future, potentially with Xbox One and PC players as well. Since Mojang and Minecraft are owned by Microsoft now, those platforms seem like they would be able to work together.
The original choice of photo does make one think, however. Could cross-platform play be coming to Minecraft Realms at some point in the future? It isn’t the first game we’ve seen tease the idea of true cross-platform play, so maybe something is in the works that can’t be announced quite yet. Regardless, with Minecon 2016 now over, any big announcements that would be made have been already.
So what do you think? Would you want to see Minecraft Realms to allow cross-platform play with every console? What other games would you like to see be made to support cross-platform play? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
