Pokémon Sun and Moon are finally here, and Pokémon fanatics are going to want to know how to trade their new ‘mon with friends. There are two ways to trade, depending on where you and your friends are actually located.

Local Trades

The first way to trade with friends is if you happen to be right by your buddy. To trade while near each other, pull open the menu with the X button and select “Quick Link.” This option will allow you to link your 3DS to other nearby 3DSes quickly. Simply hold down on your screens until the consoles are linked.

From here, go to the Trade menu and complete your trades.

Long-distance Trades

If you don’t happen to be close to your friends, that’s still ok. You’ll be able to trade with each other over the internet. This does require a bit of set-up, but it’s all easy enough. To start, make sure your 3DS is connected to the internet. Once that’s hooked up, open the menu with X and select “Festival Plaza.”

The first time you load up Festival Plaza, you’ll have to go through a few quick tutorials to get everything set up. Once done, your lower screen will update to show two big circles, one for battling and one for trading. Make sure your 3DS is connected to the internet, and click the blue circle in the bottom right to connect your game to the internet as well.

Once all set up, click the “Trade” circle, and you’ll get a few more options. You can Link Trade with a specific friend, use the GTS or use Wonder Trade. If you have a friend to trade with, go to Link Trade to get paired together. If you have a Pokémon you want to trade for another from anyone in the world, put it in the GTS. If you want to roll the dice with what you get, try out Wonder Trade.

To make it easier to find your friends when using Link Trade, make sure to set them as VIPs in Festival Plaza. You can set people as VIP by talking to them in the plaza or paging them inside the castle. When you open up Link Trade, you’ll be able to go to the VIP list to select your friends easier.
