The Legendary Pokémon of each game are the prizes of the Pokémon world. These powerful and rare creatures are normally hard to find and definitely hard to catch.

And with Pokémon Sun and Moon , we have more Legendary Pokémon to find and use in battle. Of course we have the box Legendaries and the Tapus but there are a lot more Pokémon to be found in Alola.

Here’s a list of every Legendary Pokémon in Sun and Moon with their locations and how to catch them.

SPOILER ALERT! The following list will spoil some story elements so if you don’t want to be spoiled before you play turn back now.

SOLGALEO/LUNALA

The box Legendaries, Solgaleo and Lunala are the first Legendary Pokémon you can obtain in the game.

You don’t have to do much of anything to find them but progress through the story until the part where they challenge you to a battle happens.

Of course, whether Solgaleo or Lunala appear to you depends on your version, so choose wisely.

COSMOG

Cosmog is actually the pre-evolution of Solgaleo and Lunala and to get yours you need to complete the game and become the Champion.

Then go to the Altar of Sunne and go through the portal. The portal is only open during the day in Moon and at night in Sun.

Then go to the Lake of Moon and to the top of the platform. A cutscene will start and you can get Cosmog.

It evolves into Solgaleo or Lunala depending on your version.

ZYGARDE

The Legendary Pokémon of Kalos makes its way to Alola but you’ll need to work to get this monstrous beast.

You’ll need to travel around the islands and collect Zygarde Cells and Cores to assemble your very own Zygarde. To find all 100 Cells and get more information on Zygarde refer to our Zygarde guide.

MAGEARNA

The first Pokémon revealed in the Alola Region, Magearna is one of those Mythical Pokémon.

However, Magearna cannot be caught in Sun and Moon but is instead one of the distributions The Pokémon Company likes to do. A QR Code will be distributed that will allow you to find and catch Magearna.

The Magearna distribution will begin Dec. 5 with the premiere of the Volcanion movie.

TAPUS

The Island Guardians are powerful Pokémon with unique abilities and typings. They protect the Alola Region from the Ultra Beasts and other threats.

Tapus are not easy so be prepared for a fight.

Tapu Koko

Tapu Koko is the first Island Guardian you meet in Sun and Moon so it’s fitting that you face off against it first. After you become Alola Champion, you and Lillie will travel to Tapu Koko’s shrine and there it will challenge you.

If you can’t catch Tapu Koko during this event, reports say you can go back to the shrine later to try again.

Tapu Lele

This Guardian in the Ruins of Life on Akala Island. You’ll need the Machamp PokeRide to get to to the shrine.

Tapu Bulu

The trickiest of the Tapus to find, the Ruins of Abundance in the Haina Desert of Ula’ula Island is where Tapu Bulu is. You’ll have to traverse the desert in the following order to find the ruins:

up, right, up, right, left, down, up

Tapu Fini

Ruins of Hope on Poni Island. You’ll need the Machamp PokeRide to access. This Tapu has Aqua Ring so it will be healing.

ULTRA BEASTS

A surprise to some is that the Ultra Beasts can be caught in Pokémon Sun and Moon and it has to do with the post-game content and missions.

There are five Ultra Beasts to catch in each version with two of the Ultra Beasts being version exclusives. To find out which Ultra Beast you can catch in each version and the best way to catching them, refer to our Ultra Beast guide.

NECROZMA

The mysterious black Pokémon Looker was talking about at the end of the post-game is Necrozma.

To find this Legendary Pokémon you’ll need to travel to Ten Carat Hill on Melemele Island and head to the Furthest Hollow section of the area. This is a random encounter so you will want to bring a Level 70 Pokémon at the head of your party and use a Max Repel.

Walk around the grass for a bit until Necrozma eventually shows up.

It should be noted that Necrozma IS NOT an Ultra Beast so don’t bother using Beast Balls on it.

It’s a pure Psychic-type and starts at Level 75 so go in preparing for a fight.

MARSHADOW

The mysterious Marshadow is in Pokémon Sun and Moon after trademark leaks and data mining.

However, Marshadow is not catchable in Sun and Moon, but is a future Mystery Gift distribution.
