The enhanced edition of Quake is now available for veterans and even newbies. It comes with a lot of new features like cross-play for multiplayer and dedicated servers for online deathmatch matchmaking.
In terms of content, the only new addition is the “Dimension of the Machine” episode. This particular episode was developed by the MachineGames team and created for the game’s 25th anniversary. Players get to fight their way across new dimensions but face an old enemy.
Those who buy the enhanced edition get access to the two expansion packs: Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity. Included as well is the Dimension of the Past expansion pack. The enhanced edition is available on Steam. However, Steam users who already have the game can download the enhanced edition for free.
In addition to the expansion packs, the original soundtrack by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails is also included. Bundled as well are the soundtracks for Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity.
The improved features in this new edition are:
- Enhanced Graphics
- Experience new models and updated maps.
- Better lighting and dynamic shadow system.
- Individual features of the enhanced graphics can be turned on and off.
- Free Optional Add-ons
- Like what was done with the re-releases of DOOM (1993) and DOOM 2, players can expect to get free optional add-ons periodically released.
- The first add-on is Quake 64.
- Split-Screen Multiplayer
- The game now offers four-player split-screen multiplayer for all platforms.
- This is available in both deathmatch and co-op modes.
- AI bots are also available for players to go against in deathmatch mode.
- Online Multiplayer
- Play custom matches on player-hosted servers.
- Join matchmaking and play on dedicated servers.
- The game now has the extra levels of Acrophobia and The Edge in deathmatch mode.
- Dimension of the Machine also offers all new deathmatch levels.
