Warner Bros. revealed the first footage from upcoming Batman v Superman sequel, Justice League, at their 2016 Comic-Con panel in San Diego.
The quasi-trailer for Justice League shows a more lighthearted narrative than the dour Dawn of Justice , as Batfleck travels around the world to recruit The Flash, Cyborg and Aquaman. But the Justice League Comic-Con trailer also contains an additional, secret cameo. While Batman v Superman was full of time travel dream hijinks, the Justice League Comic-Con trailer nods to the real master of time and space: Rick Sanchez of Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty.
Check out the Justice League footage (above) at 0:50 and again at 1:44. Yep, in Barry Allen’s secret Flash lair (where he keeps his second-favorite chair), Rick and Morty is on the television (Season 1 episode “Something Ricked This Way Comes”).
According to Seth Grahame-Smith, writer of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter , Zack Snyder “is a HUGE Rick and Morty fan.”
But that wasn’t Rick and Morty’s only appearance at Comic-Con 2016. Series co-creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland also premiered an animatic clip from Rick and Morty Season 3.
Rick has been transformed into a… hot dog? We don’t know what episode in Season 3 this Rick and Morty clip comes from, but it seems possible it could be part of Rick’s escape from Galactic Federation prison (he turned himself in at the end of Rick and Morty Season 2). So you’ve got a full-sized character shrunken down to escape prison.
Now check out Slashfilm’s description of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 footage shown during the Marvel panel at Comic-Con:
“A despondent-looking Baby Groot is walking around when Yondu calls him over. He wants Groot to sneak into the captain’s quarters and steal a prototype fin. We see Baby Groot carefully slip in, dig around… and come back to Yondu with a piece of fabric. “That’s my underwear!” Yondu exclaims.
A montage ensues of Groot bringing back the wrong items, including a toe, a desk, and a prosthetic eye.”
Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has a shrunken down version of a main character using his wits to escape space prison.
It’s not that Rick and Morty is ripping off Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 or that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is ripping off Rick and Morty. But it is a surprising demonstration of just how ubiquitous crazy, sci-fi storytelling has infiltrated every layer of our pop culture, from late-night cartoons to big budget summer blockbusters.
