Rumors of a dual-camera setup for the Samsung Galaxy S8 have circulated for months. However, new details reveal some quantitative information about the prospective feature for Samsung’s 2016 flagship.
On Tuesday, SamMobile shared details from its Weibo source , which claims the Galaxy S8 will include two rear-facing cameras, one with a 12-megapixel lens and another with a 13-megapixel lens. A dual-camera setup allows users to capture different bokeh effects: a way to change the depth-of-field in a photo for aesthetic purposes. The Galaxy S8 may also include a front-camera upgrade to an 8-megapixel lens as well as an iris scanning sensor in its front panel.
Currently, not much is known about the Galaxy S8 as its cousin, the Galaxy Note 7, recently hit stores Aug. 19. The upcoming smartphone may be announced in February 2017 during Mobile World Congress .
The iPhone 7 is also expected to have a dual-camera setup with one standard 12-megapixel lens and another 12-megapixel telephoto lens.
Apple recently sent out press invites to a Sept. 7 event, where the iPhone 7 is expected to be unveiled. The invite features an image shot in bokeh, which leads pundits to believe the smartphone will include such a feature.
If true, dual-cameras for both the Galaxy S8 and the iPhone 7 could indicate virtual or augmented reality features for the devices. In addition to the camera rumors, reports suggest USB Type-C, which was introduced on the Galaxy Note 7 and a 4K display , which may make the device compatible with Google’s Daydream virtual reality protocol. Reports suggest that the iPhone 7 dual-camera setup could also be an indication of Apple experimenting with augmented reality technology for its smartphone, after acquiring a 3D camera company called LinX.
