The Samsung Galaxy S8 isn’t expected to release for at least another eight months, but there are already several rumors popping up about the device’s possible features. Recently, reports suggest the 2017 flagship may feature a dual-camera configuration, similar to what is rumored for the iPhone 7.
A source from China told the blog WCCF Tech development of Galaxy S8 dual-camera lens modules may be done in-house, spearheaded by SEMCO, the Samsung Motors division. Samsung has opted to develop many components of its devices in-house in recent years. Though some models of the current Galaxy S7 feature a Sony IMX260 camera lens, others feature Samsung’s ISOCELL module . The manufacturer has dedicated a lot of time to improving the quality of its mobile cameras. The Galaxy S7 is considered one of the best mobile cameras currently on the market, featuring a 12-megapixel lens with f/1.7 aperture.
The Galaxy S8 isn’t the only Samsung device rumored to feature a dual-camera configuration. The same rumor is circulating for the Galaxy Note 7, expected to launch in early August . Often, features highlighted on Galaxy S devices are more quietly introduced on Galaxy Note devices as a test. While the Note line is available to the global market, it is higher-end and less mainstream than then S line, making is a great test bed. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the feature on both flagships.
However, it is also possible this rumor is far-fetched. The same rumor also circulated prior to the Galaxy S7 launch, but the device released with a single-lens configuration. Overall, reports indicate Samsung aims to continue improving the cameras on its Galaxy flagships. An early rumor suggested Samsung plans to use technology from its NX brand of high-end cameras in its mobile cameras, bringing features like more megapixels, wider lenses and sharper aperture, as well as other enhancements like infrared autofocus . So far none of these rumors have been confirmed.
