At long last, Dark Souls 3 is finally available in stores around the globe, bringing a new string of challenges and monstrosities for the Dark Souls community to overcome. Of course, while many fans take pride in carving through each new entry in the series, figuring out the weaknesses of each boss and discovering all the secrets hidden throughout the game, many people need a bit of help to make it through each new Dark Souls release. So we’re putting together guides to help you get through the game’s toughest encounters.

In this article, we’ll be teaching you how to take down Iudex Gundyr, the first of several bosses encountered in Dark Souls 3. Iudex Gundyr is a two-phase fight. The first is pretty simple. Using a massive lance, Gundyr slashes at the player, using a massive jump/lunge attack to close the distance when needed. We recommend sticking close to Gundyr during this stage of the fight, if you’re comfortable with the dodge roll, sneaking a quick hit or two in between the boss’ attacks. If you prefer a more cautious approach, keep lots of distance between yourself an Gundyr, dodge his lunge attack, get two or three hits in and continue that pattern until he transforms

Once he’s transformed, player’s don’t have much choice. You’ll need to stay as close to the boss as possible, ideally positioning yourself behind Iudex Gundyr to avoid his basic attacks. Use the dodge roll to avoid his ground slam, which happens a second or two after he stands up on his tail, and punish Gundyr anytime you manage to get behind him.

Try not to get discouraged if it takes you a couple of attempts. And if you’d like to see someone else take down the boss, to prove it can really be done, check out our video tutorial below.
