Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow versions are the pinnacle of many trainers’ childhoods but after 20 years, the original trio of Pokemon games have been brought to the Nintendo eShop so you can play the Gen 1 games on your 3DS .

And with the original 151 Pokémon being the only ones to capture in these games, trainers are very likely to fill up their Pokedex with no problem….except finding that elusive #151, Mew.

Mew in Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow was only available (legitimately) via a promotion nearly 20 years ago. Of course, trainers bypassed this using their GameSharks to get Mew RBY but with the re-release of the Gen 1 games and no GameShark to be found how can trainers catch Mew?

Well, many didn’t know that there was a Mew glitch in Red and Blue that allowed for savvy trainers to catch Mew with a little workaround.

There are few ways to use the Mew glitch in Pokémon Red and Blue but the Cerulean City one seems to be the most popular and easiest way to catch Mew.

CERULEAN CITY MEW GLITCH

  1. Once you enter Cerulean City, defeat all the trainers on Nugget bridge including Gary/your rival. NOTE: Don’t fight anyone else.

  2. Go to the patch of grass to the West of the bridge and catch an Abra in that area. But avoid the trainer that is there AT ALL COST

  3. Proceed to defeat every trainer on Route 25 (the road to Bill’s house) except for the Youngster with the Slowpoke. (check image below)

  4. Teleport back to Cerulean PokeCenter and heal and stock up on Pokeballs.

  5. Walk back to the same area to the West of Nugget Bridge. Save your game and prepare for the following.

  6. Press DOWN and START at the same just as you’re about to encounter the trainer we avoided before. This will allow you to access your Pokemon and you can use Abra’s Teleport to go back to Cerulean PokeCenter. An exclamation point will appear above the trainer’s head once you get out of the START menu but you will have teleported away already.

  7. Go back to the Youngster from Route 25 and battle him. NOTE: You’ll need him to walk up to you or the game will crash. Just walk along the wall in front of him and he’ll walk to you.

  8. Defeat Youngster and then Teleport back to the PokeCenter

  9. Walk to Nugget Bridge and the game will press START for you. Press B and then a Mew encounter will appear.

  10. Catch Mew

There’s a lot going on and it may seem a bit complicated but once you’ve saved it at certain points you can restart and try again if you mess up. Below is an infographic with some “colorful” language for you to peruse. It has images of where the trainers are and where you should be placed.
