Ubisoft revealed development on a new project related to the Rayman franchise. The news follows rumors of a potential remake of the original title.
The news comes as the original Rayman game was the title that made Ubisoft popular with a lot of players. But it has been more than a decade since the last entry in the popular platforming series.
Work on the Rayman Brand
The French publisher said that work is still in the early stages. It is apparently trying to explore what it can do next for the series. A Ubisoft spokesperson said that Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan are leading the exploration phase.
They noted that the situation is still very early. It added that it will share more details at a later date. This means that a new Rayman game will most likely not be ready for quite some time, according to Kotaku.
However, this does give fans of the platforming franchise more reasons to expect other upcoming projects from the publisher. The announcement also came after reports of a potential Rayman remake, codenamed Project Steambot.
A report claimed that the unconfirmed remake was still in early development by the studio. It also noted that former members of the team that worked on Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown were transferred to work on the new project.
This comes after Ubisoft disbanded the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team after the game allegedly failed to meet internal expectations. Executives also apparently did not greenlight a sequel or expansion for the game, Insider Gaming said.
Potential Rayman Remake
The rumored Rayman remake is said to be being worked on primarily by people from Ubisoft Milan. This is the studio that directly contributed to the creation of more than two dozen Ubisoft games over a two-decade timeline.
It was also claimed that Rayman creator Michel Ancel was being brought in as a consultant for the potential remake. However, this raised some concerns among team members because he was involved in a "toxic leadership" issue in 2020.
Various reports claim that other people from the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team were transferred to work on the development of Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Some were apparently moved to work on an unannounced Ghost Recon game, according to The Gamer.
Ubisoft also declined to detail exactly what Ancel's role on the new project is and whether or not his involvement was something that the studios involved requested or if it was a decision by higher management.
