Will the Nintendo Switch affect production of the 3DS? Nintendo

With the reveal of the Nintendo Switch and the way players can take their games on-the-go without the need of another system, the fate of the Nintendo 3DS is up in the air.

Will the Switch make the 3DS obsolete? Will there be no more games that are made solely for the Nintendo 3DS? Nintendo weighed in on concerns about the future of the handheld system to Polygon .

“Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system first and foremost,” the company told Polygon when asked if the system was going to impact the sale of the 3DS portable systems. “We have made no announcement regarding the future of Nintendo 3DS.

“Obviously with sales of almost 60 million 3DS portables worldwide, there’s still a huge hunger for new games, such as Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon . There are many more games in the pipeline.”

There are games that are produced solely for the 3DS platform. Handheld Pokémon games are a perfect example, using the top and bottom screens to give players a better experience. Although, The Pokémon Company CEO confirmed a Pokémon game will be coming to the Switch; it could be a two-pronged attack for the company.

And, just as Nintendo said, sales of the 3DS are very strong; it is the top-selling handheld in the market. In light of the current lack of information surrounding the Switch, there doesn’t seem to be much evidence of a major shift away from the 3DS just yet.

The Nintendo Switch will release in March 2017.
