Wonder Woman is seen stealing the God Killer Sword from the Themyscira armory in the latest photo released ahead of the film’s April 2017 release date. Entertainment Weekly published the exclusive photo and gave a few contextual details that could hint at what Wonder Woman plans to do with the sword.
"There is a point in any good origin story where the hero has to make the decision to step out on her own, forge her own path, and fight for what’s right. For Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), her moment comes when she disobeys her mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen); breaks into the heavily guarded armory on her idyllic all-female island of Themyscira; and — as seen in the exclusive image above — steals the Amazon’s mythical sword, the ‘god killer,’ before heading to Europe to help save humanity."
“This is her moment,” director Patty Jenkins added. “She’s heard all the terrible things about man’s land. But she’s also heard that mankind is in need and under duress. This is her great moment to make the decision to be the one to try and save them.
The very presence of the sword makes you wonder who has been killed with it and which one of Wonder Woman’s enemies will be the next victim. There’s a possibility it could be Ares, the god of war, who may have appeared in the Wonder Woman trailer released last month disguised as a German Army officer Erich Ludendorff. The actor in question is Danny Huston, known for roles as a villain in movies like X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The strongest evidence is a brief fight scene where it looks like Hudson's character has supernatural powers.
It’s still unclear whether Huston is in fact playing Ares, but if Wonder Woman is going to kill the god of war, the god killer sword is a nice thing to have.
Wonder Woman arrives in theaters June 2, 2017.
