The landscape of WWE television has changed for the foreseeable future with RAW and SmackDown getting unique rosters following the WWE Draft. Fans have had many questions about the logistics behind the brand split, with the biggest question being “what’s happening with the championship belts?” We already have RAW’s answer, and now it looks like we have SmackDown’s as well.
As mentioned on the Bear Hug It Out podcast, which can be seen above, SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan confirms there will be a new women’s championship belt coming to the show. When asked his thoughts on RAW making the WWE Universal Belt, Bryan responded with “I’m not against them making a new title, we are going to do that for the women on SmackDown.”
Now the real question is, who’s going to be getting the belt first? Based on last week’s show, the top feud is between Becky Lynch and Natalya. However, after their match, all the women on the roster walked out front. The segment just kind of ended there and was never mentioned again, which was really confusing.
I can see this going two ways, one would be a match between Becky and Nattie for the belt at SummerSlam, mirroring the fight for the Universal Belt with Seth Rollins and Finn Balor. The problem with this is there’s no explanation as to why these two women get the match over everyone else.
Based on all of the women coming out last week, I think SmackDown will have something similar to what RAW did, making a mini tournament for the women to fight to the top. This will help create a logical reason for the match to take place, and for what women will be involved.
That being said, who knows? Maybe there will be a women-only Battle Royal at SummerSlam, with the winner getting the belt. Looks like we’ll just have to keep tuning in on Tuesdays to find out more.
So what do you think? Are you excited to see a new women’s championship coming to SmackDown? Do you want to see any other new belts in WWE? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
