Microsoft Gaming CEO and Xbox head Phil Spencer recently talked about the decision to keep the console's games off other platforms.
The discussion happened during one of the press interviews that Spencer has been doing since the Xbox Developer Direct 2025. At some point, he was asked if "Starfield" would be "staying put for the time being" on Xbox.
Xbox's Hardware Capabilities
Spencer said that the summarized answer was "No," and he noted that there was no specific game that was in this kind of position. The Xbox head went back to his "red line answer" where he said potentially anything could go to other platforms.
He then went on to explain what the company is doing now to create the "best platform for the world's best games." Spencer highlighted how the "biggest games" are available in "multiple places."
The Xbox head previously made similar comments about the company's strategy when he was invited to an interview last week.
At the time, Spencer explained how the company would continue to ship more games on PlayStation and Nintendo platforms while also citing creators who want their games to be played by as many people as possible, according to Pure Xbox.
Spencer's comments about "Starfield" mark the latest status update about the game following rumors regarding exclusivity. They argued that Bethesda's space RPG could be coming to other platforms other than Xbox in the future.
What made the rumors even more believable is that other titles, such as "Indiana Jones and the Great Circle," have already been confirmed for the PlayStation 5. This is a shift in the company's strategy of not releasing its titles on other platforms.
Video Game Exclusivity
The situation also comes as fans of the Xbox console have raised concerns as the company has experienced year-over-year declines. Some are even wondering why anyone would need to buy Xbox hardware in the future, Windows Central said.
During the recent interview, Spencer also discussed how he wanted Xbox to win in the video game industry using hardware innovation instead of taking advantage of exclusive games. He said that he wants fans to choose the console based on capabilities.
Spencer talked about the difference that they have seen in the last two decades, saying that the situation right now is good. He said that coming from building games, it was important to remember that it is games first and not platforms first.
The Xbox head said that the majority of games that people will be talking about run across different platforms. These are the titles that he said have the most success in the industry as they are at the top of the charts, according to the Video Games Chronicle.
