ABC will allegedly renew Agent Carter season 3 even though the Marvel TV series has fledgling viewership, according to Nerd Reactor’s inside sources. In a recent interview with IGN , Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter, said ABC and Marvel would not make an official announcement until May.
However, Nerd Reactor’s findings directly contradict with a very blunt statement from Executive Producer Michele Fazekas. “Bad. People have to watch the show. While I would love to see it continue on, it’s a bummer — a bummer for all of us, cast included,” she told Entertainment Weekly.
Agent Carter is most recognized for her introduction in Captain America: The First Avenger. She is an agent of Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR), the same branch that recruits Steven Rogers and transforms him into a super soldier. Agent Carter’s ABC debut was also inspired by the Marvel One Shot of the same name, but takes place before the One Shot timeline. The series picks up where the First Avenger left off in the wake of World War II, after she loses Cap.
Season 1 of Agent Carter debuted with 6.9 million viewers, but by the end of the season those numbers were down to 4 million. Season 2 started with 3.18 million and ended with 2.35 million. Both seasons have very positive reviews, even though some fans liked the first season better. Rotten Tomatoes has named Agent Carter Season 1 ‘Certified Fresh’ with 95% of viewers enjoying it, season 2 is a little less at 80 percent.
ABC has already renewed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for season 4 even though season 3 has yet to finish. S.H.I.E.L.D. has suffered lower than normal ratings as well, even though the series has very positive reviews. It’s unclear why ABC is waiting to renew Agent Carter. The studio could be shifting focus to a series that could attract more steady viewers. ABC has ordered a new Marvel series called Most Wanted , which focuses on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Bobbi Morse, aka Mockingbird. ABC is also working on a spin off comedy called Damage Control , which jokes about cleaning up superhero’s messes.
Regardless of whether or not Peggy Carter continues to get her own show, these days there are plenty of places Agent Carter could squeeze into the MCU. If Season 3 doesn't get renewed, you’ll see Agent Carter again sooner or later.
