Agents of SHIELD Season 4 episode 9, “Broken Promises,” proved Director Jeffrey Mace and Coulson’s team can get along. Jemma has been too busy going after The Watchdogs and preventing AIDA from getting the Darkhold and seemed to have forgotten about Mace’s big secret. But the promo for Agents of SHIELD Season 4 episode 10 suggests this newfound working relationship won’t last long.

“There is a very good reason director mace is never too far away from that briefcase,” General Talbot tells Jemma and Fitz. “We need answers.”

Does this mean The Patriot somehow gets his powers from a briefcase? The promo also shows May has woken up, which could prove to be quite a problem for AIDA and her disguised LMD. AIDA plans to use a decoy android version of May to find out where Coulson is hiding the dangerous book. While Mack thought he killed AIDA, the team doesn’t yet know Dr. Radcliffe had already built an upgraded version of her.

Jeffrey Mace’s backstory in Agents of SHIELD Season 4 has been largely a mystery. While he revealed himself as an inhuman and believes a “team that trusts is a team that triumphs,” it’s clear he’s hiding something. Jason O’Mara, who plays Mace, told TV Line our questions about Mace will be answered very soon, probably in next week’s episode, which is fittingly titled, “The Patriot." Let the truth about the U.N bombing be known.

“How Mace got his powers, his whole backstory, is going to be a major part of the next batch of episodes.”

Mace’s heroics and inhuman abilities are part of the reason he got him the job as SHIELD Director. When Coulson resigned, he wanted Steve Rogers to become the head of SHIELD, but this was during the time Captain America went MIA after Civil War. Mace, Coulson said, was the next best thing. While Coulson’s request for someone powered ultimately resulted in Mace being appointed director, it was also obvious from the start that the two have some sort of history together. There’s been tension and mistrust between them since the first episode of Season 4. Any ideas on what Mace could be hiding? Let us know in the comments below!
