With the first preview of Android N now available to developers, there is much speculation surrounding the upcoming operating system, particularly what it might be called. Google has reportedly been polling users on its Opinion Rewards application.
Android Police recently discovered an Android N-themed survey on the Google Opinion Rewards app. One option asked respondents what comes to mind for a treat that begins with “N.” Another option listed several “N”-named treats and asked respondents to pick their favorite. Among those was “Nori,” recently teased by Google Senior Vice President for Android Hiroshi Lockheimer. Or, Lockheimer could have tipped this off as a decoy for the real Android N name.
But now, we know one tasty treat that Android N definitively cannot be: New York Cheesecake. Reports also indicate that Google is referring to Android N internally as New York Cheesecake, or NYC. Code of this internal nickname was recently discovered within the Android Open Source Project repository , according to Android Police. The blog notes that Google has used other dummy nicknames in the past, such as Key Lime Pie (KLP), Lemon Meringue Pie (LMP) and Macadamia Nut Cookie (MNC) to throw enthusiasts off the scent of the true Android names: KitKat, Lollipop and Marshmallow.
Pundits have noted that Lockheimer’s mention of Nori could suggest that Android N will be named after a savory tasty treat rather than a sweet one. We’re rooting for Nachos; however, since it is included among the Google Opinion Rewards, the likelihood of it being the true Android name is slim.
