The Avengers are all the rage these days with Captain America: Civil War premiering later this week. Early reviews are universally positive, and the film is set to make a killing at the box office. With Marvel on the verge of striking gold yet again, what could be next for the illustrious franchise? Perhaps its first female-led superhero movie?
A recent poll conducted by Fandango (via USA Today) surveyed 1,000 moviegoers who already purchased tickets for Captain America: Civil War. The ticket service company asked participants to vote on which Marvel character they’d like to see in a solo movie, and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow overwhelmingly beat out the competition with 48 percent of the total vote. The nearest runner-up only garnered 15 percent of the vote, which went to Paul Bettany’s Vision. Anthony Mackie’s Falcon took third with 12 percent, followed by Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye (10 percent), Don Cheadle’s War Machine (8 percent) and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch (7 percent).
So, is a Black Widow Avengers solo film actually possible? It seems like anything is imaginable for Marvel, but can they fit her into their already busy schedule? Doctor Strange will round out the list of this year’s releases in November, while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 headlines Marvel’s calendar in 2017. A slew of other titles will arrive over the next several years, including 2019’s Captain Marvel, which is in line to become the company’s first female-led superhero film. That doesn’t mean the Black Widow dream has to end there, however.
According to Den of Geek, Marvel has three release dates planned for 2020 that are currently untitled: May 1, July 10 and Nov. 6. These dates could very well be utilized for Black Widow’s solo film, especially now that the people have made it clear they want one. Screen Rant notes that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige teased the idea of Black Widow movie set for phase 4. While he admitted to Marvel having a packed agenda, he did leave the door open to speculation, saying “Yes, for sure, I think that [Black] Widow at some point would be great.”
Though Black Widow has mainly been designated as a supporting role throughout the Avengers films, Scarlett Johansson is a bonafide movie star and could certainly carry the weight. This writer is all for it. What about you? Let us know in the comment section below.
