iPhone, iPad and Mac users are once again getting pranked with a new ‘Crash Safari’ bug. The prank, which is actually just a link to the website Crash Safari(dot)co, is causing Apple devices to crash and reboot soon after the unsuspecting victim clicks on it.
The link sends users to a website with a self-generating text string which populates the address bar which in turn overload the browser causing it to crash. Though the prank largely targets iPhone and Mac owners using the Safari browser, if you visit the Crash Safari website from a Chrome browser on an Android device, you’ll notice the device starts running sluggish and heats up quickly.
Luckily this little trick is quickly remedied. As soon as the device restarts, the problem disappears. The Crash Safari website is one of the more harmless pranks we’ve seen on mobile users compared with some of the doozies we saw last year ( yes, effective power text, we’re looking at you). Nonetheless, pranksters on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook are causing their friends’ devices to crash or slow down by sharing the link in a shortened version so that you can’t readily tell what it is.
If you see a friend you know is prone to pulling tricks, tweet or send you a shortened link, I’d think twice about clicking on it. There’s a good chance you’ll find yourself annoyed and rebooting your device because it’s the Crash Safari link.
