Not much is known about the Avengers game from developer Crystal Dynamics, but from what we’ve gathered based on new job listings, there will be both online and single-player content. Older job listings revealed that Avengers will be a third-person action game with stealth, cover, weapons and melee attack options, so these new listings are our best source for current info on the game.
The first two job listings makes it quite obvious Avengers will be online. There’s no reason to hire an Online Network Programmer or an Online Services Programmer unless there were online components. Previous listings sought a Lead Level Designer that can make “fun and unique online experiences” and understands “the social implications of shared gameplay.”
On the flip side, another job listing for a Senior Single Player Producer also makes it pretty obvious there will be single-player gameplay along with online multiplayer. Unfortunately, the rest of the job listing doesn’t provide any insight into what the Avengers game will be like, outside of the vague “third-person action adventure” description found on other job listings.
While it has been speculated that Avengers could be a Destiny-like game, with even solo players forced to log in to a server, that hasn’t been proven. In fact, the Online Network Programmer position lists under the “Position Requirements” section that the role will “own vast sections of our multiplayer game engine.” Assuming the wording is correct for the job listing, there will be a separate engine for multiplayer. Crystal Dynamics wouldn’t create a separate engine for multiple players if Avengers was going with the Destiny set-up. Everything would share one big engine.
All we know for sure is the information found on the game’s official site. According to the blurb, Avengers will feature a completely original story and will be playable “for years to come.” A release date, trailer or any other interesting information has yet to be released.
