Coming off the heels of a massive box office opening, the Merc with a Mouth is suddenly one of the biggest celebrities in America. Deadpool has earned the distinction of becoming the “biggest X-Men movie ever,” which is an impressive accomplishment considering Deadpool’s last maligned appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Naturally, people want to see more of the burgeoning star and his nonchalant version of humor, which is perfect for the late-night TV circuit.
New movie stars and talk shows are usually a shoe-in fit. Audiences want a chance to listen to their favorite actors on a genuine platform with honest answers. But don’t expect Ryan Reynolds to show up to the Tonight Show anytime soon. For one, he’s not exactly a “new” sensation. Secondly, the film’s marketing push is continuing despite the movie being out for over a week already. Reynolds’ Deadpool continues to show up in interviews fully suited-up and in character. Take for example his recent appearance on CBS’ Late Late Show with James Corden.
But what about the holy grail of late-night comedy television, Saturday Night Live? Deadpool is seemingly the perfect guest. He’s funny, charismatic and has already shown he can flex his acting chops. This isn’t just my opinion - fans of the anti-hero created a petition to have Deadpool appear on Saturday Night Live. But alas, it isn’t to be. Ryan Reynolds posted an “explanation” on Twitter, straight from the infamous mercenary himself. Take a listen below:
If you’re in tune with pop culture and music, then you likely heard about Kanye West’s recent SNL meltdown somewhere on social media. Deadpool spoofs his epic rant in perfect fashion, also managing to incorporate numerous other celebrities and trends in his SNL rant. References to Kanye’s new album, The Life of Pablo, are in there, as well as a nod to the rapper and Taylor Swift’s beef that has been revitalized thanks to some unsavory lyrics.
If you still haven’t seen Deadpool, perhaps this will be all the convincing you need to head over to the theater. Plain and simple, Deadpool just doesn’t give a f*ck. And that makes for great entertainment.
