Some of you might hesitate to put points into your character’s Luck perks in Fallout 4, but you shouldn’t ignore the category. In fact, Fallout 4 is one of the few games with a “Luck” aspect where you can actually see the benefits of the perk. Here’s why you should spend those points buffing out your character’s Luck perks.
Luck Helps You Level Up Faster
Let’s say you want to play as a melee-based character. Melee builds are great for Fallout 4 beginners as usually your first instinct in Bethesda games is to pick up a weapon and start bashing things (i.e. Skyrim). Your next move is likely to focus on Endurance and Perception with a little bit of Charisma perks, which is fine for a melee build. Your Intelligence and Agility are probably lower than you’d like them to be.
This is where Luck comes in. You might be a tank, but you’ll die early on in your wasteland exploration as you’re slower and not so great with sneaking around. Instead of buffing out your character with Strength and Endurance perks early on, considering taking those points and putting them into the Luck perks. For example, since your Intelligence is low the Luck perk Idiot Savant will get you extra XP randomly for just playing the game. You could be doing something as simple as crafting a bed for your settlers and earn 3x the XP. The perk is unlocked if you have at least Luck 5 as a base. Check out what the Idiot Savant perks entail:
- LCK 5- You're not stupid! Just... different. Randomly receive 3x XP from any action, and the lower your Intelligence, the greater the chance.
- LCK 5, LVL 11 - You now randomly receive 5x XP from any action. The lower your Intelligence, the greater the chance.
- LCK 5, LVL 31 - Randomly receiving bonus XP from any action may trigger 3x XP for all kills for a short period of time. The lower your Intelligence, the greater the chance.
Don’t be concerned about things that require high Intelligence such as Hacking. Nick Valentine, a companion you get early on in the game, is an expert Hacker and you can command him to do these things for you. There are ways to get by in the wastelands of Boston without having high intelligence.
Luck Gets You More Bottlecaps and Ammo
You might have a Fallout 4 character that doesn’t have high Intelligence and needs to buy better weapons. You might have a character that is an excellent craftsman, but you can’t find the materials you need to craft the item. No matter what build you have, more bottlecaps to spend in the wasteland is a great thing. Here’s the upside to leveling up the Fortune Finder perk:
- LCK 1 You find more bottle caps in containers.
- LCK 1, LVL 5 You find even more bottle caps in containers.
- LCK 1, LVL 25 You find even more bottle caps in containers.
- LCK 1, LVL 40 You find even more bottle caps in containers, and there is a chance of enemies exploding into a shower of caps when you kill them.
Then there’s the Scrounger perk. There will be many times where you have an awesome weapon, but the ammo it needs is rare/expensive. The Scrounger perk allows you to scavenge more ammo than you normally would without it. If you character is a sniper with excellent perception, more ammo can only make them even more invincible.
- LCK 2 You find more ammunition in containers.
- LCK 2, LVL 7 You find even more ammunition in containers.
- LCK 2, LVL 24 You find even more ammunition in containers.
- LCK 2, LVL 37 You find even more ammunition in containers
Luck Perks Are Hilarious
There’s nothing better than the Mysterious Stranger randomly showing up and taking out an enemy you didn’t even need help with in the first place. The Bloody Mess perk will have your enemies explode for messing with you. The Ricochet perk will make you feel like the Man of Steel with bullets coming back to haunt your enemies. The Luck perks are random and will give you funny moments in what can be an intense game. Take advantage of them and have fun dominating the wasteland!
