Since Final Fantasy 15 is finally out, you’ll want to conquer every nook and cranny of its densely-packed world. While mastering elemancy (the art of magic and spell crafting ), obtaining all 13 Royal Arms and power-leveling will help you vastly as you progress through the game, you’ll want to enjoy some diversions along the way. Read our Final Fantasy 15 guide below for tips and tricks on how to play and win at Justice Monsters Five, the pinball-like minigame.

Justice Monsters Five is Final Fantasy 15’s flagship mini-game, available in every Crow’s Nest Diner. Justice Monsters Five is a pinball-style mini-game that lets you fire orbs at enemies in order to destroy them by depleting their HP bars.

Defeating all the enemy orbs in a wave advances you to the next wave. There is a boss encounter every few waves. The boss has more HP and can also come with minions.

You start with four random orbs and the game ends when all four of them run out of HP. You can track each orb’s HP by viewing the semi-circular green gauge to the left of the icon.

Controls

  • X/A: Tap to shoot and hold to charge. Orbs have one of three properties: pierce, burst or climb.

  • L/L: While shooting or charging: this slices an orb and gives it a spin that affects the trajectory.

  • L1/R1 or LB/RB: Select orb

  • Triangle/Y: Swap orb

  • Square/x: Use Hero Tech

  • Circle/B: Quit

Justice Monsters Five requires you to shoot your orb at the correct movement while it is moving back and forth on the bumper at the bottom of the screen. It will shoot in the opposite direction of the side the orb is on when it shoots. The orb’s angle depends on how far to the side of the bumper it is when you shoot, so if it’s all the way to the side, it will shoot an almost straight diagonal line and so on.

Orb Attacks

Plain Shot: Tap x/a to shoot a plain orb. The rb fires immediately without delay and you can shoot it in rapid succession, eliminating nearby enemies.

Charged Shot: Hold x/a, then release. This launches your orb’s special attack after a short delay. You can tell what each orb’s special attack is by looking at the letter in the bottom-left corner of its icon. B is for Burst: the orb explodes upon impact for bonus damage. C is for Climb : the shot runs up the wall and lets you hit enemies from behind as long as no object blocks the orb’s progress. P is for Pierce , a shot that penetrates enemies, which is effective against weak points as well as multiple aligned targets.

Hero Tech: When the blue tech bar on the right side of an orb is full, hit square/x to use its Hero Tech (its ultimate power). You can try selecting a different orb and not swapping to it before using the Hero Tech ability, which causes the selected orb to join the game for a while after using its Hero Tech. That means you have two orbs on the board at once. #nice

You want to pay attention to what the enemy is doing as well. When you see colorful beams radiating from the enemies, it means you need to dodge them by timing the shots correctly. The intervals between beams tend to be pretty long, so you can aim or do multiple quick shots with ease. But if you don’t avoid these beams, your orb will be damaged and lose HP..

Elements and Orbs

There is a roster of default orbs to which you can add by playing the app version of the game. Each orb is infused with an element which you can see by looking at the icon next to the orb or creature’s element. To do big-time damage, check out the element of the creature you’re aiming at and use an orb of the opposite element.

In-Game Events

  • Combo : When you hit an enemy at least twice within three seconds, you trigger a combo. The more hits, the more damage each subsequent blow deals.

  • Red dot between parentheses: This is the boss’s weak point. Strike it for huge damage.

  • Rectangular HP bottle: This restores a small amount of HP to all orbs.

  • Circular HP bottle: Restores medium amount of HP to all orbs.

Justice Slots

  • HP UP Heart Icon: 2 slots out of 3 restores 50% HP to all orbs, 3 of 3 restores 100% HP to all orbs.

  • Bonus Damage Icon: 2 slots out of 3 reduces current enemy HP by 20%, 3 out of 3 reduces current HP of enemies by 50%

  • Tech Ready Icon: 2 slots out of 3 fills all orb tech bars by 50%, 3 of 3 completely fills all tech bars for your orbs

  • Board: 2 slots out of 3 slots grants two treasure chests upon stage completion, 3 of 3 grants five treasure chests upon stage completion

  • Chocobo Coin : 2 slots out of 3 grants 30,000 bonus points. 3 of 3 grants 100,000 bonus points.

Boards

Each wave of Justice Monsters Five takes place on a unique board. Based on the environment, your orbs’ trajectory may be altered. Ideally, avoid unwanted collisions so you can attack your targets from behind and cause multiple bounces, triggering a combo.

Sometimes in later levels there are kickout holes which trap your orb and then release it. This has the possibility of striking enemies from behind.

REVIEW SUMMARY
Final Fantasy XV
8.5
Combat, Plot, Characters Create Something Flawed, Beautiful, Fantastic
Despite it's flaws, Final Fantasy XV is a milestone achievement: not just for being completed, but for being completed with polish, aplomb and love.
  • Engaging main cast of characters
  • Fun, fast-paced combat
  • A massive, beautiful world to explore
  • The Regalia!
  • Continuous updates have addressed some shortcomings of the initial release
  • Major aspects of the story feel rushed or absent, particularly toward the end of the game
  • Stealth sequences feel out of place
