Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced in 2015 at E3, to immense excitement and a little bit of worry in the gaming community. We saw the game again later that fall, and bits of information came out over the following few months: The game would have an action-oriented battle system, and would come out in multiple parts to avoid making major cuts to the original. In 2016, however, we’ve barely heard a peep. Well, get used to it: It’s going to stay that way for a long time to come.
Expect To Hear Nothing About Final Fantasy 7 Remake For Years
For whatever reason, a handful of studios tend to announce their games years and years in advance. Nintendo and Square Enix are probably the worst offenders in this regard (although Sony isn’t great either—just look at The Last Guardian), and the saga of Final Fantasy Versus XIII won’t be quickly forgotten—although all’s well that ends well.
But sometimes buzz and hype matter more than actually releasing a product in a timely fashion, and that was certainly the case for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. When Square Enix announced it more than a year ago, development was still in its very early stages. The full form and shape of the game was still up in the air. The reveal was essentially a tease and a promise. That promise will someday be fulfilled, but Square Enix has no huge motivation to rush it. Whenever it comes out, Final Fantasy 7 Remake will move millions of units—and probably sell lots of systems as well. It’s more important for Square Enix to do it right than do it in a hurry.
After all, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is a massive project, one that will span multiple games and keep a huge amount of the original game intact, in an entirely new engine with entirely new gameplay. The game will also add new story segments, based on Advent Children and other media.
In the meantime, Square Enix has no major incentive to show off FF7 Remake at every trade show and convention especially not before Final Fantasy XV finally comes out this winter. That’s where the company wants our attention. FF7 can wait.
