‘The Flash’ Season 2 ‘Escape From Earth-2’ Recap: Did Zoom Kill Jay Garrick?

Season 2 episode 14, “Escape from Earth-2” resumes right where the last episode, “Welcome to Earth-2,” left off. After The Flash is captured by Zoom, Harrison Wells and Cisco are left to their own devices to find Barry.

As the episode trailer suggested, Cisco and Harrison Wells recruit help from Earth 2 Barry and Iris. The new Flash team decides to find Killer Frost and ask her to bring them to Zoom’s lair. Barry discovers she is hiding in ‘The Woodlands’ and the team sets off to try to convince Killer Frost, aka Earth-2 Caitlin Snow, to help them. She stays loyal to Zoom at first, but Cisco and Iris are somehow able to catch the ice queen off guard. She agrees to lead them to Zoom’s hideout.

Back in Earth-1, Jay and Caitlin stabilize the breach but Geomancer is out terrorizing Central City. Jay Garrick takes it upon himself to help. Luckily, Caitlin has developed ‘Velocity 9,’ a serum that can bring back Jay’s speed for short periods of time. Jay is able to save everyone from Geomancer, and Caitlin is able to capture the super villain before he starts another quake. Unfortunately, Geomancer’s powers destabilized the breach again and Jay only has 1-hour left to fix it before Barry, Cisco, and Wells are expected to return.

Barry is now sitting in a cell with Wells’ daughter Jesse and a mysterious man. He gives Jesse a thoughtful pep talk and convinces her to help him decipher the knocks the 3rd prisoner is making on the glass of his cell. Together, they figure out the man is spelling out ‘Jay.’ However, Zoom phases through the wall of Barry’s cell and beats him to a pulp.

At this point, Cisco, Wells, Killer Frost, and Earth-2 Iris and Barry have found Zoom’s lair. Wells immediately frees Jesse but Barry can’t figure out how to phase through the cell wall the same way Zoom did. Earth-2 Barry convinces The Flash that if he just puts his mind to it, he can phase fast enough to pass through the wall. Barry succeeds but in doing so, the team has wasted precious time and Zoom appears before they are able to escape. Turns out, Killer Frost betrayed The Flash and had planned to turn them over to Zoom all along. However, she quickly has a change of heart and blasts Zoom with ice waves as the team escapes, leaving the third prisoner behind.

Jay fixes the breach in time and Barry, Jesse, Wells, and Cisco all make it back to Earth 2. While they are all celebrating, Jay is standing suspiciously close to the portal and Zoom reaches his hand through the breach, into Jay’s chest, and pulls him back to Earth 2.

It’s unclear at this point if Zoom has already killed Jay. Zoom’s hand literally went right through Jay’s chest. However, Jay may be able to survive since he is a speedster and because of ‘Velocity 9,’ which is healing his speed cells. Is it a coincidence the third prisoner was asking Barry and Jesse about Jay? Probably not. The masked third prisoner was in Zoom’s captivity before Jesse, which suggests he’s very important to Zoom. Out of all things he could have said to Jesse and The Flash, why spell out ‘Jay’?

Think back to Season 2 episode 11, “The Reverse Flash Returns.” Remember when Caitlin is looking for Jay Garricks Earth 1 doppleganger? Jay reveals his Earth-1 doppleganger was adopted, and his name is Hunter Zolomon. How coincidental, that is Zoom’s real name. We don’t yet know Zoom’s true identity, so here are the hypothetical scenarios based on the latest episode: Jay is just Zoom’s doppleganger or Hunter Zolomon is Zoom. Seeing Zoom just phased his hand through Jay’s chest, and Zoom and Jay (Earth-2 Flash) are archenemys, it’s unlikely Jay is Zoom. It is suspicious that Zoom already took Jay’s powers, yet captured him once again. However, that could be just to lure The Flash back to Earth-2.
