In The Flash Season 2 episode 20, “Rupture,” we are bound to find out more about Cisco’s (aka Vibe) abilities. We got a taste of Vibe’s potential powers when we briefly met Reverb (Cisco’s Earth-2 doppleganger) earlier in Season 2. Before Cisco could learn too much about how his alter-ego uses his powers, Reverb was killed by Zoom. Now, Reverb’s brother Rupture (Earth-2 Dante Ramon) is out to get revenge for his fallen brother. Rupture is convinced Vibe is responsible for Reverb’s death instead of the real culprit, Zoom.
Entertainment Weekly caught up with Carlos Valdes about tonight’s episode, which will finally put Cisco front and center (well, at least more than usual). Of course, Barry needs his speed back, so also expect a lot of particle accelerator pondering and bickering. But what may be more interesting is what Cisco will learn from Rupture that could make him more comfortable using his powers moving forward.
Valdes teased about what to expect from Vibe in the finale episode when he becomes less hesitant to show off his metahuman abilities. It didn’t come as a surprise when Valdes revealed Vibe will play a crucial role in stopping Zoom, especially considering the powerful foreshadowing of abilities displayed by Reverb.
“His powers start to prove a vital function in stopping Zoom. Fans can expect his powers to have to come through in a clutch. What better way to learn how to swim than to just get thrown in the water and paddle?” Valdes said.
Valdes took it a step further during an interview with IGN. “They actually end up serving a fundamental purpose in the finale,” he added.
This begs the question, what exactly can Vibe do and how will he help The Flash?
We’ve seen Vibe’s sonic waves open the breach to Earth-2, so we know he can somehow penetrate interdimensions--including the multiverse and the speed force. If Cisco can harness the cosmic energy of the multiverse into vibrational force and use it as a weapon, he may the most powerful meta we’ve seen on The Flash.
Traditionally, Vibe’s sonic shocks can shatter just about any material, including steel and concrete. Cisco’s vibrational powers allow him to track and find speedsters (like he does with ‘Jay Garrick’s’ cap). Seeing how he can disrupt the speed force, this poses an extreme threat to Zoom. When Amanda Waller recruited Vibe as a member of the JLA, it was a failsafe in case The Flash ever went rogue. Vibe’s vibrations can shut down the speed force entirely, which would leave speedsters like The Flash powerless.
