A new world record has been set for the farthest hoverboard flight by jetski racer Franky Zapata, who created the Flyboard Air. Zapata, 37, broke the previous world record set by Canadian inventor Catalin Alexandru Duru, who traveled 905 feet, 2 inches.
Zapata used his invention to fly 7,388 feet, the length of almost 21 football fields, in the south of France. according to the Guinness Book. His journey was made over the water, off the coast of Sausset-les-Pins, for safety reasons -- should there be a mechanical failure then the landing would be relatively safe.
According to Zapata Racing, the company created by the record-holder, the hoverboard can reach a maximum height of 10,000 feet and a speed of 93 miles per hour. This is not the first world record held by Zapata, who previously set a record in 2014 for the most backflips with a water jet pack in 2014.
"It's an amazing sensation, it's really peaceful," Zapata told The Verge, when asked what it felt like to ride the Flyboard Air. "I open my arms because it helps me control my movements, but when you open your hands and you feel the wind go through your hand and you have nothing under your feet — it's hard to describe, really. You have to experience this moment in your life."
